Music connects people

Last week I was reminded how lucky I am and how music truly connects people.  24 years ago, with an amazingly caring young woman named Stephanie, I gave up a child for adoption. Fast forward to now. In late November I was fortunate enough to meet that happy baby turned handsome young man, Luke. We had a wonderful visit in December and it lead to us doing FaceTime lessons soon after. A couple of weeks ago Luke came to Denver again and we pulled together quite a large gathering. This group of people included Luke’s mom Diane, stepdad Lanny, sister Jennie, girlfriend Leslie, birth mother Stephanie with her two daughters Ella and Hattie, my wife Mindy and our son Collin. One evening Luke’s mom asked if we could play a few songs for everyone and provided some requests. Luke and I snuck off to learn 3-4 songs quickly. When we returned everyone was seated in a half circle, facing two empty chairs. I asked the family to sing along and really participate. It wasn’t easy since we can all be shy around people we don’t know well, plus there were cameras rolling. By the second song the entire room was filled with singing and laughing.
